Inspired by the ancient Greek aulos and the rich traditions of Mediterranean reed instruments.
Crafted from Arundo donax cane sourced on Santorini, the instrument consists of two pipes, each fitted with its own separate, attached single reed. Played simultaneously, the pipes can produce a sustained drone accompanying a melody or create melodic interplay between the two voices.
Rooted in an exploration of ancient Greek musical heritage and informed by Mediterranean single-reed traditions, this instrument reflects Yannis Pantazis's individual approach to historical instrument research and craftsmanship. It is a contemporary creation inspired by the ancient aulos tradition, rather than a claim to reproduce a specific archaeological specimen. Each instrument is individually handcrafted, bringing together traditional materials, specialist craftsmanship and an ongoing exploration of the sound world of ancient and traditional wind instruments.
