Traditional Music in the modern world

Maria-Christina Harper and Niki Xylouri create an electrifying soundscape that approaches Greek traditional music in a dynamic and modern way. Jazz and avant-garde elements enrich this musical encounter merging two musical worlds and the results forms the basis for understanding the path to musical creation.

Niki Xylouri, daughter of legendary Psarantonis, has a warm distinct voice and uses traditional Greek percussive instruments and a custom-made baritone lyre. Greek born with Egyptian roots, electric jazz harpist and composer Maria-Christina Harper is reinventing the sound of the harp in the jazz world. The two musicians craftfully connect the sounds of their instruments and musical influences creating unique sounds. Their first performance was at the Jazz Chronicles concert series of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre.

Their first album will be released by United we Fly in 2024 with Psarantonis’ participation.

of being lost in our time.

The music group Eran started its course in 2013 as a group of musician friends with a common point of love for the music of Crete (eran means to love). From his first steps he was embraced not only by the love of the public but also by the appreciation of renowned musicians and artists with whom he collaborated such as Giannis Xylouris, Elias Logothetis, Maria Zachari, Panagiotis Sdoukos and many others. of the number of concerts inside and outside Crete as well as 2 discography works.

"SOLO OUT"

"SOLO OUT"

Maria Papageorgiou comes with her special project Solo Out, on Saturday, September 4th.

Always restless and consistent in her dream, she abolishes the repertoire norms and returns with a new proposal.

Solo Out is a solo stage tour that premiered in 2010 and found ground to flourish ten years later on the Gazarte stage in Athens, not as a need to remove people, sounds and vibrations, but as a maximum exploration of our minimal selves.

Surrounded by all kinds of musical instruments, Maria Papageorgiou, in a solo performance, dresses with imagination songs from her discography, her meeting with the work of Mikis Theodorakis and songs she loved, giving a new reading to them through her broader meaning. musicality. Guitars, synths, loops and percussions compose this musical environment and weave their languages, decades, songwriters and stories.

On July 31 & August 1, 2021, George Xylouris (vocals & cretan lyre) and Yiannis Polychronakis (double bass) played in the garden courtyard.

George Xylouris, or "Psarogiorgis" as he is called in Crete, always manages to combine in a perfectly harmonious and elegant way the strict and simple sound of the Cretan tradition with some select of modern elements, which emphasize the free "flight" of the imagination.

This rare combination emerges through his deeply experienced relationship with Cretan music that begins in his childhood in his village, Anogia, and through a rich experience in collaborations with musicians from other related traditions as well as its artists from the contemporary music scene.

In the program he will play at SYMPOSION he will present traditional pieces, his own compositions and improvisations in order to introduce his listeners to a dimension of Cretan music that is beyond and far from the usual folklore references, in a much wider field of timeless archetypes and authentic expression.

Giannis Polychronakis (double bass) will accompany him, one of the most open and innovative musicians of today's Crete.

PROMENADE IN TRADITION

Traditional music is unquestionably one of the fundamental pillars in the language of a people - for its originality, unpretentious beauty, effortless simplicity and pure expressive power.

Aggelos Drossos, Michalis Markopoulos and Yannis Pantazis have been exploring the fundamental rhythms of Greek traditional music for the past ten years. With "PROMENADE IN TRADITION" they present an anthology of selected songs and musical compositions drawn from the archipelago of Greek musical heritage.

On August 7, 2021, KADINELIA played in the garden courtyard.
